Our Western Mongolia Tours take you far west of Mongolia is a remote and unique geographical area with a population of nomadic people equally as interesting and diverse as the land they inhabit. The landscape along our Western Mongolia Tours includes high glacial mountain peaks, large lake basins, steppe grassland and desert sand-dunes. One of the main minority groups in this area is the Kazakh minority, who are as well the largest one in Mongolia, inhabiting the province of Bayan Ulgii since the mid 1800s. The Kazakhs along our Western Mongolia Tours are still maintaining their traditional customs and traditions, they live in large felt gers and hunt with the aid of huge, golden eagles in the winter months to supply themselves with fur from the prey.

Day One in Mongolia

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

We’ll Take a Domestic Flight to the Starting Region of our Western Mongolia Tours

You will be picked up from your hotel by your guide and driver and transferred to the airport for your flight to Bayan Ulgii. The flight will take about four hours including a short stopover in Moron for refueling. On arrival in Ulgii you will be met by our local staff and driven toward west of the provincial capital to the small town of Tsengel Soum. Tsengel village is an interesting mixture of two ethnic minorities, namely the Kazaks and the Tuvans. After a drive of about 3 hours we will camp for the night at a scenic location along the River Khovd. (L, D)

Day Two in Mongolia

Today Along Our Western Mongolia Tours, We’ll Driver Overland by Jeep towards Khoton Lake

After a relaxed breakfast we will drive south-west towards the two lakes. The landscape will change from high barren mountains to mountains rich with larch forests, grassy meadows, and snow capped peaks. We will set up camp at the edge of Khoton Lake at a place called Zagastain River. (B, L, D)

Day Three in Mongolia

During Our Western Mongolia Tours – Feel Free to Hike, Visit Nomadic Families or Enjoy Resting

You are free on these days to hike in the surrounding mountains, horse ride with local nomads or just rest and soak up the beauty and tranquility of the area. There are several Tuvan and Kazak families living near the lakes and you are free to meet with them and see how they spend a typical day. (B, L, D)

Day Four in Mongolia

Western Mongolia Tours – Overland by Jeep to Ulgii and Explore the Town

Today we will leave the beauty of the lakes area and drive back to the provincial capital of Ulgii. Stop to take photographs of this unforgettable landscape as you say goodbye to the people of the lake. If time permits you will be able to take a tour of the city visiting such places as the provincial mosque, and the colorful market. Camp overnight near the River Khovd. (B, L, D)

Day Five in Mongolia

Return Flight to Ulaanbaatar

Today we will take the early flight back to Ulaanbaatar. On arrival back in the capital you will be met by a nomad’s driver and transferred to your hotel. (B)
