Mountain Biking Tours in Mongolia
We have provided mountain biking tours in Mongolia for over two decades, mostly organized in cooperation with companies from abroad that organized the groups. We have also worked with private groups of bikers, at times renting out mountain bikes, though most bikers prefer to bring their own equipment.
Our two weeks Mountain Biking Tours program takes you to the Khangai Mountains and Arkhangai province.
The Khangai Mountains are especially suitable for mountain biking, day after day of single tracks, paved by animal feet, spectacular views and endless downhill slopes are a highlight. Our Mountain Biking Tours in Mongolia paths are rarely used by other traffic, exempt the nomadic families moving into their high-altitude summer camps. Those are the only people the bikers meet.
Capable four-wheel-drive trucks transport the camp, mess tent, food, and drinking water. Another vehicle follows the track and takes on bikers that give up or have technical problems. Spare parts and extra drinking water can also be transported here.
The landscape is varied. Beginning the trip in a small village with hot sulfur springs in north-eastern Bayanhongor, we start north towards the mountains. The countryside is arid and sparsely vegetated, but the higher we get, the greener the valleys become. Eventually we reach a plateau that stretches for days, drive around the highest eastern-Khangai mountain called Erkhet, which towers over 3500 meters above sea level.
When descending into the Orkhon river valley system, the north facing slopes are covered with thick larch forests. The streams are crystal clear and run over white rocks. Green meadows, inhabited by nomadic families and their yaks and sheep, invite for visits and tasting of locally made dried curd and tea. Down streams and rivers, we travel past monasteries and possibly visit another hot spa or a lake, depending on different variations of the Mountain Biking Tours program.
