Mongolia
Cultural Tours

To herd sheep with the help of horses that are ridden, to use their wool, milk and meet, to move around the land, following the growth of the pasture was a cultural breakthrough for mankind thousands of years ago. Since, all over our planet this way of live has run out of fashion. The more special it is that in Mongolia this is not quite the case: Still a substantial part of our population and surely not less people than ever in the past are nomadic, allowing our clients to observe and experience.

This lifestyle goes hand in hand with a  set of wonderful skills  our clients will see within the people here: Self-reliance and resilience are essential if one lives alone in a ger, throughout the year, with its severe winters, protecting ones sheep and goats from the cold, starvation and the wolfs that howl through the nights. To be content with oneself and ones close family members, to survive monotony, to endure year after year the same routine of living a life determined by the seasons and the concessive needs of the animals.

Guests and meeting other people is a much welcomed blessing for nomadic families. The conversations and exchanges brings variety into their live. Our interest into their lives is valuable to them. Additionally our clients are encouraged to prepare for such visits, think of suitable presents for the family members, people that are ahead of most, in their capability to choose, what is really needed, having to consider many times every year what is worth to pack and carry and what should better be left behind for others to use or decompose.

Faith has always been a strong influence on the culture of the people in Mongolia:  Shamanism, Buddhism, Communism and in the western province of Bayan Olgii, Islam has helped people to understand themselves and their surroundings, has influenced the routine of the days, the celebrations within the seasons, has created a complex set of behavior with countless dos and don’ts, that are visible every minute we spend with the people on the land.

Museums and Monasteries are filled with beautiful artworks to enjoy, Monks can be observed and spoken to, the history of Buddhism in Mongolia can be studied on our cultural tours.

But frequently the cultural highlight is the travel and getting over extended periods of time, familiar with the team, our crew that supports our client’s journey:  Though most of our guides, drivers and cooks would consider themselves as modern city people, actually they are “modern Nomads” still carrying their cultural treasure within them and once our friends do share insight with us.
