NOMADS
Office CULTURE
Vibrant, Spacious & Functional
We would not work in the Tourism Industry if we were not happy to have people around! And people that are interested in what we do, we like even better! We make coffee for them and give them cookies as well as WLAN access. And if they are interested in a holiday we consult them with all our experience!
Nomads used to rent an office, first a couple of rooms in the trade union building next to the parliament building, then in the Peace and Friendship Association building at the Peace Avenue, little west from the State Department Store. Once we started to have vehicles we needed garaging. Everyone else did so too, as cars in the 90s increased a lot in numbers and temperatures in the winter do not allow comfortable usage of a car if not inside a garage.
Additionally we had constantly maintenance work to do, in fact built our trucks over the off-season time. Again something that is impossible to do outside and very difficult in insufficiently equipped facilities. As all the former state owned businesses and industries went through restructuration in the 90s Nomads could rent some halls or garages in run-down buildings without facilities or even access to water. We therefor looked for space to buy and built our garage according to our needs. After many years of search we were lucky: A new law that forbid the hunting and processing of Marmot fur had caused a coat factory to close, the owners had no need for the buildings and land, it therefor was for sale.
Over the time we developed the space, renovated the run-down buildings on the compound and the surrounding wall, facilitated together with our neighbors access to the central waste water system and renovated access to water, heating and electricity and built backup supply for electricity and water. As then the space was still outside of the city, it was quite big and much of its space was surplus. Therefor we started with the help of the German SES Senior Expert Service the development of a garden. The trees and bushes crew beautifully and today even from on Google Earth this green spot is very visible. Especially in June the garden becomes colorful when the many bushes bloom. By now the city has caught up, the ‘Engels bridge’ was built, a connection between the Gandan Monastery towards the south, an area then called White Gate (Tsagaan Halag) after an arch over the road that since has been removed. The roads around the Nomads compound had been unpaved when we moved there 15 years ago, the big 4 lane road along the Dund River that runs by the Gobi Cashmere Factory was not even there. It then was just a dam, built to protect Khan Uul from flooding, in memory of the big flood 1966 that washed away that part of the city.
Once we finished the building and cleaned up the surrounding, put grass on the open space and concrete for parking space, people from other companies that were looking for rental, came by and asked if we would like to let. The combination of office space, garage, and outside parking for vehicles and even overseas containers was practical for other companies as well and so we since have had constantly tenants, mostly companies that stay for many years and work in mining or trade.
