Trekking in the Altai Mountains

Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the rivers, lakes, and mountains of the far west of Mongolia. Hike across the peaks of the Altai Mountain range, looking out across the stunning landscape of snow-capped mountains with green meadows at their bases. Meet Kazakh eagle hunters and their families. Dare yourself to pick your way across the 20km long Potanin glacier, before returning to Mongolia’s capital city for a day of sightseeing and cultural activities.

Day 1

You will be picked up from your hotel by your guide and driver and transferred to the airport for your flight to Bayan Ulgii. On arrival in Ulgii you will be met by our local staff and driven to Mount Shiveet Khairkhan. Stop for lunch en route and enjoy the landscape as you rise higher into the Altai Mountains. On arrival, base camp will be set up. You will stay here for the next three nights.

Day 2

For the next two days you are free to explore this untouched mountain landscape. Cold mountain streams, and high snow peaked mountains will be all around. As you hike, keep a look out for wild Argali sheep, ibex, wolf, pallas’ cats, and even the elusive snow leopard. The area is also home to thousands of petroglyphs and stone men, some dating back 1000 years and more. There are also several Tuvan and Kazak families living in the area and you should feel free to pay them a visit and see how they spend their time. Camp overnight.

Day 3

Today we say goodbye to the mountains and drive back to Ulgii. You will spend the night camped on the banks of the River Khovd. If time permits you are free to see some of the sights that the city has to offer. Possible places to visit include the bazaar, the provincial museum, and the mosque.

Day 4

Today we will take the flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Depending on the time of the flight you may be able to take a short hike or return back into the centre of town to take a final look around. On arrival back in Ulaanbaatar you will be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel.
